New Jersey Man Accused of Murdering Brother, Family and Setting Homes Aflame

FREEHOLD, N.J. — A shocking case unfolding in Monmouth County has left a family and community reeling after prosecutors charged 51-year-old Paul Caneiro with the brutal murders of his brother, sister-in-law and their two young children — then allegedly tried to cover up the crime by igniting fires at both his own home and the victims’ mansion.
Authorities say Caneiro was arraigned Friday on four counts of murder, along with charges of arson and unlawful weapons possession, after investigators linked him to the deaths of his 50-year-old brother, Keith Caneiro; Keith’s wife, Jennifer, 45; and their children, 11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia.
According to prosecutors, the killings occurred on Nov. 20, when police were called to the Colts Neck mansion of Keith Caneiro and found the four family members dead from multiple causes, including gunshot and stab wounds. District officials say Paul Caneiro then set fire to the family’s home — and to his own Ocean Township residence — in what they allege was an attempt to destroy evidence and mislead investigators into thinking the entire family was attacked.
Investigators say Caneiro’s actions may have been driven by financial tensions related to two businesses the brothers shared — a computer systems company and a pest control firm — both based in Asbury Park. Prosecutors have launched a detailed financial inquiry to understand how money disputes may have escalated into violence.
At his first court appearance, Caneiro pleaded not guilty. He was ordered held without bail as the case moves toward trial. While defenses have been entered, prosecutors described the crime as among the most brutal seen in their offices, emphasizing the tragic loss of young life.
The community remains shaken by the killings, remembering the victims as devoted family members and neighbors. Funeral services are being planned as investigations continue.
