Customs and Border Protection Officer Fires Weapon in Apparent Road Rage Shooting Near JFK Airport — Traffic Delays Reported

QUEENS, NEW YORK — December 16, 2025 — A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer fired his duty weapon multiple times early Tuesday morning following an apparent road rage shooting incident near John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to Port Authority police.

The road rage shooting near JFK Airport unfolded shortly before 5 a.m. on the southbound Van Wyck Expressway, just outside the airport’s main terminal entrance, when a minor two-vehicle crash escalated into a violent roadside confrontation.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found an on-duty CBP officer who reported that the other driver allegedly assaulted him after the collision, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm in self-defense.

While it remains unclear whether any bullets struck the fleeing driver, no injuries were reported at the scene and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.

Major Traffic Delays During Morning Commute

The gunfire and subsequent police probe forced temporary closures and significant traffic delays on the Van Wyck Expressway, a major commuter and airport access route. Detours were put in place as officials worked to clear the scene and resume normal traffic flow.

Officials advised motorists traveling to JFK Airport terminals to expect delays and consider alternate routes where possible. Passengers were also reminded to check flight status due to potential airport access disruptions.

Ongoing Investigation

Port Authority police are continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence as part of the active investigation into the JFK road rage shooting and officer-involved firearm discharge. The identity of the CBP officer and the other driver have not been publicly released.
